"Living Actors & Actresses of the British Stage. A record of the principal performances of living actors and actresses of the British stage - with criticisms from contemporary journals"

The Dramatic List is a useful family history resource for researchers with actors and actresses in their family tree.

The author of this compilation commented on its considerable labour and in several instances "it became essential to seek for information from actors and actresses themselves as to the dates of their appearance in certain characters.......it may be observed, however, that the principal performances of nearly every living actor and actress of special note, belonging to the English stage, have been recorded.

It may be pertinent to add, with few exceptions, the records given are limited to a statement of each player's principal appearances on the London stage, assuming it to be in this country the goal of every actor's ambition. The appended criticisms have been collected from leading journals".

The records in the main include the name, forename as well as other names used, date of birth, birthplace and a biography of appearances with dates. Criticisms or reviews are recorded by leading journals and newspapers of the time including the Daily News, Athenaeum, Morning Chronicle, Examiner, Atlas, Times, Daily Telegraph to a name a few.

Names included in the Dramatic List include Henry James Byron a descendant of Lord Byron, Madame Celeste, Charles Dillon, John Ryder, Ellen Terry an English stage actress who became the leading Shakespearean actress in Britain.
