The particulars of Officers on the Non-Effective Lists, Officers holding Honorary British rank, Staff College Graduates, recipients of the Victoria Cross, Order of British India and Indian Order of Merit, Staff and War Services, Warrant of Precedence in India and Salutes are issued separately as a Supplement in January. By the Defence Department, Government of India.

The Indian Army was the successor to the East India Company armies - which had administered large swathes of India - from 1859 when the British Crown assumed direct administration of India in the form of the new British Raj during the last half-century before the partition of India in 1947. The Indian Army consisted of regiments of Indian non-commissioned officers and other ranks, commanded by British officers.

These contents provide comprehensive Lists of the many roles, departments and sections of the Army including the Regiments, Brigade, and Former Corps., Name and Forename, Rank, and generally - Decorations received and the dates of first Commission, date of Birth, date of grade or rank or transfer or appointment to Indian Army and remarks.

A Casualty list mentions Deaths, Retirements and Transfers.

A typical entry in the List reads as follows;
Captain Whyte, Morris Hudman, Date of Birth 02/03/07,  Essex R. (Former Corps.): 1st Commission 29/01/27, Date of Rank 29/01/36, Date of Transfer to Indian Est. & Date of appointment to Indian Army 04/01/36 Remarks; 16 Punjab Regiment
