How to Obtain a Certified Connecticut Vital Record (birth, marriage, death, etc. record)

A copy of a certified Connecticut vital record may be obtained directly from:

1. the TOWN where the event occurred, or

2. from the STATE Vital Records Office


Town Vital Records Offices Contact Information

Vital Records offices are located in each of the 169 towns in Connecticut.  The vital records registrar in each town is responsible for maintaining a registry of all births, marriages, civil unions, deaths and fetal deaths that occur within its town.  To obtain a copy of a vital record from the town where the event occurred, see the Connecticut Town Vital Records Directory for town contact information.


State Vital Records Office

The State Vital Records Office at the Connecticut Department of Public Health (DPH) maintains a statewide registry of all births, marriages, civil unions, deaths and fetal deaths that have occurred in CT since July 1, 1897.  For information on vital records prior to July 1, 1897, contact the town where the vital event occurred. See the State Vital Records Directory for town contact information.

For additional information on pre-1897 vital records, you may also contact the Connecticut State Library’s History and Genealogy Unit at http://www.cslib.org/handg.htm. At the state library, you will be able to access the Barbour Collection which includes most Connecticut Vital Records to about 1850.
