Here is an example of the information you will find in the BMD indexes, by searching for Christian Bale the famous Hollywood actor enter his details in the search page his entry appears in the second quarter.

The following will usually appear, the year, the quarter, the name of the child - surname and forenames (and initial for third forename) the mother’s maiden name, the district and volume and page number of the reference required for ordering a birth certificate.

Although born in January Christian Bales’ birth was registered in the second quarter of the 1974 General Register Office GRO Birth Indexes

We searched for Woodward in the indexes and although born in June 1940 his birth was registered in the third quarter.

The surname does not appear in this instance as it is at the beginning of the list or column of surnames.

Paul McCartney the English musician formerly of the Beatles whose full name is James Paul McCartney was born in June 1942 and appears in the following quarter of the third quarter indexes as follows;

Jamie Oliver the television chef personality was born in May 1975 and appears in the Birth Indexes as follows;

The surname does not appear in this instance as it is at the beginning of the list or column of surnames.
