  NINETY YEARS OF REMEMBRANCE 1918-2008

WW1 - My Family At War

A new four-part series which will be shown on BBC1 every evening leading up to 11th November.

The series will look at the stories of eight broadcasters and celebrities who had WW1 relatives and will include names like Rolf Harris, Kirsty Wark, Kate Silverton, Phil Tufnell, Eammon Holmes, Matthew Kelly, Kirsty Wark, Natalie Cassidy (ex East Enders) and Dan Snow (historian and son of Peter).

More than one million British people lost their lives during the First World War; My Family At War examines just eight stories.

In the first episode, Dan Snow and Natalie Cassidy take two very different journeys to discover what role their families played in the Great War.

Dan Snow retraces the footsteps of his great grandfather, Sir Thomas D'Oyly Snow, who was a General during the First World War. It is an uncomfortable journey for Dan, who is fully aware of how many died due to the mistakes and poor decision-making of the Generals.

The old adage reminds us how the First World War was fought by lions but led by donkeys. Dan goes in search of whether his great grandpa's poor leadership could have contributed to the demise of so many.

Dan admits: "It was very moving making it. And I was on the verge of tears standing in the graveyards of Northern France - thinking about what happened and the mistakes he made. He was a really old man trying to do the right thing but making these huge mistakes."

Natalie Cassidy meanwhile, makes her way to East London to find out what the women in her family were doing on the Home Front, while the men went off to fight. It's an enlightening time for Natalie, who discovers her great grandmother's house was bombed during the First World War.

"I feel My Family At War has connected me to my own history says Natalie. I've now got personal memories. It is like I have been on a journey. It is wonderful understanding your family and their experiences. Knowing where you have come from is very important."

Meanwhile, Kate Silverton learns all about her great grandfather, George Silverton, who, at the age of 37, and as the father of nine children, volunteered to fight. Kate, being of a similar age, feels drawn to his brave story and is deeply moved, yet full of admiration that George had such loyalty for his country; he left his family to fight for it. Kate is shocked to see the trenches in France and saddened to hear George was invalided out due a mystery illness. Kate is keen to find out what it was and whether he ever fully recovered.

The programme is part of 1918-2008 - Ninety Years Of Remembrance, a special season of programmes on the BBC marking the 90th anniversary of the end of the First World War.

The first episode airs Monday 3 November, 10.35-11.15pm BBC ONE

Who were the last soldiers to die in the First World War? Michael Palin tells the story of the final days, hours and minutes leading up to the 11.00am ceasefire on 11 November 1918, revealing the personal stories of the last men to be killed in action.

Despite the fact that the Armistice between the Allies and Germany was signed at 5.00am, that morning United States forces alone recorded a staggering 3,500 casualties.

Right up until 11.00am when the ceasefire came into force, generals on all sides were sending soldiers into action and, for many, to their deaths.

Palin travels to Foch's carriage at Compiegne in France where the Armistice was signed and onto the battlegrounds of the Western Front as he tells the personal stories of those who died that day.

Whether British, French, German or the American Henry Gunther - the last soldier to die in the First World War - Timewatch tells the compelling story of how the "war to end all wars" finally came to a close.

An extract;

George Edwin Ellison L/ 12643 Private the British Soldier mentioned in the programme died hours before the Armistice. His name and contribution features in the National Roll of Honour 1914 - 1918 (Section VIII - Leeds)

Ellison, G.E. Private 5th (Royal Irish) Lancers

Already serving at the outbreak of the war, he at once proceed to France and in the retreat from Mons. He also played a prominent part in the engagement at Ypres, Armentieres, La Bassee, Lens, Loos and Chambrai but was unhappily killed only an hour and a half before the Armistice came into force. He was buried at St. Jean, and was entitled to the Mons Star, and the General Service and Victory Medals.

"The path of duty was the way to glory"

49, Edmund Street, off York Street, Leeds

The American Generals generally disagreed with Marshall Foch's terms the Supreme Commander of the Allied armies, believing the Germans should be pushed back to Berlin. They attacked on November 11th and lost 3000 men needlessly. Henry Gunther of the USA was the last American killed at 10.59 am. That day 10,000 men had lost their lives and the war had run 1568 days.
