It was a world conflict which lasted over four years from August 1914 to November 11, 1918 - the day of Armistice when hostilities ended and the Allies achieved victory.
The Allied Powers principally the British Empire, France and the United States defeated the Central Powers of Europe - Germany, the Austro-Hungarian and the Ottoman Empire.
The number of World War I casualties is a subject of much debate although some estimates put the figure as high as 37 million (military and civilian) casualties with over 22 million wounded and some 15 million killed. The number of military deaths is put at approximately 9 million with the Allied Powers losing some 5 million soldiers.
