Search Features - Parish & Trade

How to search the Parish and Trade records includes Search features;

The records have been scanned in order to give high quality images of the original.  These have been made word searchable using OCR (Optical Character Recognition) which is the recognition of printed or written text characters by a computer.

As several typefaces, characters and different fonts were used in producing the Parish registers and Trade Directories, OCR will not always recognise letters and words and finding a name may not be as straightforward as using a simple Search as used in other databases where all the names are indexed and only what you enter is found as an exact match.

New Search feature - Age at Death GRO Deaths includes an "about Birth date" have introduced a new search aid when searching the GRO (General Register Office) Deaths Indexes from 1866 - 1920 and now includes an "about Birth date" for easier searching and matching.

Many of you asked for enhanced search features at the Family History Show 2008 and we are already working on these. One of them is the "About Birth date" for the GRO death results from 1866 - 1920. The records already provide the Age at Death however it is no longer necessary to try and calculate the approximate Birth date, we have done this for you.

Browsing GRO Overseas Records 1761-1994 for FREE

The Overseas Records are available online for FREE where you can browse the images. The First Name on the page and the Last Name on the page have been transcribed. Therefore the name you are searching may appear between the two.

Select Search on the menu then select the FREE records tab. Then select a dataset you wish to browse.
