British World War I Military Records 1914 - 1918

World War I, also known as the First World War, the Great War, the War of the Nations, and the War to End All Wars.

It was a world conflict which lasted over four years from August 1914 to November 11, 1918 - the day of Armistice when hostilities ended and the Allies achieved victory.

The Allied Powers principally the British Empire, France and the United States defeated the Central Powers of Europe - Germany, the Austro-Hungarian and the Ottoman Empire.

The number of World War I casualties is a subject of much debate although some estimates put the figure as high as 37 million (military and civilian) casualties with over 22 million wounded and some 15 million killed.
The number of military deaths is put at approximately 9 million with the Allied Powers losing some 5 million soldiers.

Familyrelatives.com is the only Family History website that allows you to search for soldiers who died in World War I by any criteria. The information available is comprised of the indexes to the Deaths of World War I soldiers, sailors and airmen. You can search on the following criteria:

The National Roll of the Great War 1914 - 1918 (14 Volumes) Complete collection now online

The National Roll of the Great War is a unique series of 14 volumes containing 110,000 names and records of British Forces who served during the Great War. The volumes were published by the National Publishing Company and are extremely rare. Each regional volume contains a biography of men and women who largely survived the Great War.

The volumes are a valuable resource in discovering individuals who served in the First World War and help to give a sense of who each individual was and their active service. The entries provide a brief description of service, rank, regiment, dates, demobilisation and address.

A typical entry in the Manchester Roll is shown below:

LEE W. S. Corporal (Signaller). R. E.

He volunteered in September 1914, and in the following March was sent to Egypt, where he took part in the fighting on the Suez Canal. Later he took part in the Landing at Gallipoli, the three Battles of Krithia and other engagements until invalided home suffering from dysentery. On his recovery he was transferred to Mesopotamia and during his service in this seat of war, was in engagements at Amara and the capture of Baghdad. He was demobilised in August 1919, and holds the 1914-1915 Star and the General Service and Victory Medals.

Soldiers who died in the Great War 1914-1921

World War I (1914-1918) otherwise known as the Great War, saw many casualties. Thousands of officers and their men lost their lives in France, Belgium and elsewhere. Battlefield casualties survived only to die later from their wounds and others died in captivity.

In 1921 eighty volumes were published listing every soldier (including officers and other ranks) who died in the Great War of 1914-1918. We have made available this information which lists over 700,000 soldiers of all ranks who lost their lives.

The Familyrelatives.com database is unique because it allows you - the user, to search on a wide and varied criteria including the soldier's

· Surname
· Forename 1
· Forename 2
· Place of Birth
· Place of Enlistment
· Place of Residence
· Soldier's Serial Number
· Rank at time of death
· How the soldier died
· Where the soldier died
· Date of Death
· Supplementary Notes
· Regiment
· Battalion

The reason this database is unique is that it allows a search to be made on any criteria - for example ... on all those soldiers who died on the 3rd day of the Battle of the Somme from a particular regiment such as The Black Watch (Royal Highlanders) Regiment.

Below is a selection of the Regiments included in the database:
